First offered in 1986, the United States Mint’s gold bullion series, the American Gold Eagle has been an unparalleled success putting gold bullion into the hands of collectors annually since that time. This $5 1/10 oz. gold coin was struck at the Mint’s facility in Philadelphia and has gold weight and 22k purity guaranteed by the US Mint.
The classic obverse design is from Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ $20 Gold Piece, first struck in 1907. Liberty is striding forward with her right arm outstretched holding a torch and the olive branch in her left hand. She is backlit in the rays of the new day. The US Capitol building is shown in the distance behind Liberty at left.
The reverse design is by the sculptor Miley Busiek of the US Mint and features the iconic American bald eagle carrying an olive branch while dramatically depicted in flight above his nest.
The Proof 69 grade is a collector grade used only on superior coins with exemplary appearance and no visible flaws without magnification. The Ultra Cameo designation is for proof coins displaying the most contrast between the frosted details and the mirrored fields.
