Why buy this $5 Gold 1992-W Columbus Quincentenary Commemorative?

In 1992, the US Mint celebrated two important anniversaries: the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of the New World and the centennial anniversary of the mint's own first ever commemorative, which marked the 400th anniversary of the event. As anniversaries go, perhaps none in history was more significant. This coin was among those issued to mark the occasion. It bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint, where it was struck from 8.36 g of .900 fine gold. This coin was part of a mintage of 24,329 pieces.

Powerful Admiral of the Oceans Design by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr.

T. James Ferrell designed the obverse. A rim frame encircles a left-side profile of Christopher Columbus. His effigy is set against a background of a map. Together, they make it appear as though Columbus is looking West toward the Americas. The explorer's name, "CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS," is inscribed at the bottom of the design. The anniversary dates, "1492" and "1992," are inscribed along the rim on either side of the design, while "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are included above and below it, respectively.

The crest of the Admiral of the Oceans, one of the honors that Columbus received, overlaps an Old World map on the reverse, which was designed by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr. Among the inscriptions on this face are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "FIVE DOLLARS."
