Why Choose This PF70 1991-S Proof Silver Eagle?

The first American Silver Eagle coins were issued by the US Mint in 1986. This proof was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1991. It has the same composition as the standard bullion issue. Compared to other proof Silver Eagles, this coin had a moderate mintage. There were 511,924 of them struck.

The work of Adolph A. Weinman is displayed on the obverse. This design is known as Walking Liberty and was originally used for the half dollar. Liberty can be seen wrapped in the stars and stripes as she walks across the horizon with one arm extended. The reverse shows the work of John Mercanti. This design features a heraldic bald eagle and 13 stars.

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) was chosen to grade this 1991-S proof Silver Eagle. From their 70 point scale, it was given the grade of Proof 70. That indicates that even when this coin is viewed under magnification it’s completely flawless. Since it displays excellent visual contrast, it also received the Ultra Cameo designation.
