Proof Gold Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1991. Compared to other years that this size was offered with a proof finish, mintage of this coin was moderate. Stunning Work by Saint-Gaudens and Miley Busiek

A design that was originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is shown on the obverse. In this design, Liberty is depicted with her torch held high and an olive branch in her other hand. The date can be found over the sun's rays to the right of Liberty.

The reverse shows a large adult bald eagle as it returns to the nest. The eagle's mate and their young are patiently waiting in the safety of the nest. The inscriptions on this side state the gold weight and face value.

Graded Proof 69 with Ultra Cameo by NGC

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) was selected to grade this coin. After it was examined, it was awarded the grade of Proof 69 and the Ultra Cameo designation. These mean this proof $5 Gold Eagle is almost perfect and it has great visual contrast.
