Why add this 1/4 oz. Proof American Gold Eagle struck in 1991 to your collection?

1991 marked the fourth year of production of the 1/4 oz. Gold American Eagle proof coin. Though the Gold Eagle series was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1986, the 1/4 oz. Proof was added to the series in 1988. This 1991-P Gold Eagle, struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1/4 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold, has a final reported mintage of 50,839 proofs.

Classic Depiction of Lady Liberty

The obverse image pays tribute to the 1907 $20 Gold Double Eagle designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, utilizing his design depicting Lady Liberty striding forward carrying an olive branch and a flaming torch, with the sun's rays radiating in the background. The image is surrounded by fifty stars, "LIBERTY" and "P." The date of 1991 is inscribed as "MCMXCI," representing the final year of the series to be dated with Roman numerals.

The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, illustrates a dramatic bald eagle in flight carrying an olive branch to his nest, where his mate awaits with their young.

Gorgeous Proof 69 Ultra Cameo

The Ultra Cameo (UC) designation refers to the incredible differentiation between the frosted and mirrored surfaces struck onto the coin. This virtually flawless 1991-P Proof 1/4 oz. Gold American Eagle received the grade of Proof 69 from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and is encapsulated in a labeled NGC holder to protect its condition.
