1991-D Uncirculated Mount Rushmore Half Dollar Commemorative
Mount Rushmore is one of the largest statues ever attempted by any artist in history. It sits atop a hill of solid granite in the Black Hills of Southern South Dakota near the town of Keystone. It was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum. Each of the four heads (Presidents Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt, and Lincoln) are about 60 feet tall. The entire memorial covers nearly 1,300 acres and is 5,725 feet above sea level.
This memorial took from 1927 until 1941 to complete to the point as it sits today. It was originally design to cover the presidents down to the waist line, but the death of the original sculptor and budget shortfalls put an end to the project at the collar area of each of the presidents.
The design of the obverse of the coin shows the four sculpted heads with rays of sunshine above the sculpture and the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "MOUNT RUSHMORE" and the year finishing off the design. The reverse design includes an American Bison (Buffalo) - one of the more prevalent mammals of the Northern plains and badlands of South Dakota.
