1991 Korean War Memorial Silver Dollar Commemorative

Thirty eight years is not a typical anniversary one might consider minting a coin, but in this case it is more than appropriate. The end of the conflict in Korea came about in a truce signed by both the North and the South that they would agree the country could be divided along the 38 degree north latitude. Now it makes sense!

Beginning in June of 1950, this three-year long conflict cost the lives of nearly 700,000 people and divided a country forever. It is safe to say that – while the end of the war brought an unsettling peace to the region, nobody really won the conflict. The two countries have been at a stalemate for over 60 years, and no immediate friendly diplomatic resolution seems possible.

Nevertheless, the United States fought this war as a part of a United Nations coalition force against the North Korean army, which was predominantly Chinese backed by the Soviet Union. It is in part credited for the Cold War that lasted until the 1990s when the Soviet Union collapsed, and is largely to blame for strained relations between the United States and China.

This is not to say that the United States did not fight this war and lose so many lives without cause. An ally to the United States was being invaded by communist backed forces and had to be contained or the ally (South Korea) would certainly have lost their land, culture, and country to communism. The fact that South Korea still exists as a diplomatic country is largely to credit to the UN forces – including many American troops.
