1990 US Mint Uncirculated Coin Set

The 1990 US Mint Uncirculated Coin Set contains two sets of each of the coins that the United States Mint produced for circulation that year. They come in pliofilm sleeves that protect the coins from damage that they could otherwise suffer from colliding with one another. The coins in the pliofilm that has a red border are from the Denver Mint, while those in the pliofilm with the blue border were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Also encased are tokens from each of the Mints.

Designs in the coins and tokens of the 1990 US Mint Uncirculated Coin Set

The obverse of each coin features the image of a president, from which the coins get their names. On the Lincoln cent, President Lincoln faces to the right side of the coin. Each of the other presidents, Kennedy on the half dollar, Washington on the quarter, Roosevelt on the dime, and Jefferson on the nickel, face to the left. “LIBERTY” is inscribed on all of the obverses, along with the mint mark “P” for Philadelphia or “D” for Denver, year of issue, “1990,” and national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

The obverse images of the half dollar and quarter both include an eagle holding important symbols, arrows and an olive branch. In the case of the half dollar, the design is modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States. The penny and nickel have images of buildings, the Lincoln Memorial and Monticello, respectively. The dime has a torch, an olive branch, and an oak branch. All of the reverses include inscriptions of the face value, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one), a motto taken from the Great Seal, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

The tokens in the set have the word “UNCIRCULATED” inscribed along the top and the city of the mint in which they were struck on the bottom. The first letter of the city is inscribed in the middle in a large font. They share an identical image on the reverse: the seal of the US Mint, which features a shield with the scales of justice at the top and a key on the bottom. Around that image, there is a circle that separates it from the rim. On the rim, the word “TRESURY” is inscribed at the top and “UNITED STATES MINT” is inscribed at the bottom.
