Why add this $5 1/10 Oz. American Gold Eagle to your collection?
The American Eagle Bullion Program was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1986, offering a new series of gold and silver bullion coins for collectors and investors. The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States; the weight, content, and purity guaranteed the U.S. Government. Fractional weight Gold Eagle Proof coins were struck for collectors at the U.S. Mint's Philadelphia facility of 22-karat gold until 1994. This 1990 Gold Eagle is struck from 1/10 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold and measures 16.51mm in diameter.
Design of the 1907 Double Eagle by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is reborn on this coin.
Surrounded by fifty stars, Lady Liberty confidently strides forward with a rising sun in the background on the obverse; olive branch and flaming torch held in her outstretched arms. The U.S. Capitol Building appears at the lower left; inscribed "LIBERTY" above, "P" and "MCMXC" (1990) to the right. The reverse features Miley Busiek's rendition of a bald eagle flying with an olive branch in its talons, returning to his nesting mate and hatchlings.
