Why Choose This 1989-P $5 Proof American Gold Eagle?

While proof Gold Eagles have been offered since the introduction of the series in 1986, it wasn't until 1988 that all 4 sizes were available with a proof finish. This 1/10 oz. proof Gold Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia branch of the U.S. Mint in 1989. Like other coins of the series, it's made of 22 karat gold. There were 84,647 of these minted. Compared to other years of the series, this figure is slightly high.

Classic Liberty Obverse with Modern Bald Eagle Reverse

While the American Gold Eagle is a modern coin, the obverse actually features a classic design. This depiction of Liberty is the work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It was created in the early 1900s for the Double Eagle. The date can be seen below the olive branch in Liberty's hand. This side also shows the "P" Mint mark.

The level of detail present on the reverse is stunning. This design is the work of Miley Busiek. A family of bald eagles can be seen here. One of the adults has just returned and the rest of the family is patiently waiting in the nest. The lower portion of the design is inscribed with the gold content and face value.
