Why buy this 5 oz Silver Proof 1989-1993 George and Barbara Bush Commemorative Medal?
George H.W. Bush spent his life in public service. He fought in the Second World War and spent over a decade in Congress before serving as President Ronald Reagan's Vice President for two terms. He went on to succeed Reagan with victory in 1988 and led the world's response to Saddam Hussein's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. While he lost his reelection bid to Bill Clinton in 1992, Bush continued to be an admired figure in America partially due to his embrace of old age, which included parachuting on his 90th birthday, and for his close relationship with his wife Barbara. This 5 oz. medal is one of two, struck to commemorate the lives of George and Barbara Bush. It was struck at Commonwealth Mint from .999 fine silver and is part of a mintage of just 500 pieces that are exclusive to Modern Coin Mart.
Powerful George and Barbara Bush Design Created by Don Everhart
Don Everhart created and sculpted this Medal. Everhart's expertise as a Coin and Medal Sculptor spans over forty years and includes his time at the United States Mint as Former Lead Sculptor. The obverse features a touching portrait of George and Barbara Bush smiling as the look off in the distance to the right of the holder. Their names, "GEORGE H. W. BUSH AND BARBARA BUSH," arc over the portrait along the rim.
On the reverse is a plaque that George Bush kept in his office. It reads, "CAVU CEILING AND VISIBILITY UNLIMITED." This was originally a reference to the flying conditions that he wanted as a Navy pilot when he had to fly off of, and land, on carriers in the Pacific. He wrote a letter to his children that referenced the plaque. It said, "We had little navigational instrumentation, so we wanted to CAVU, ceiling and visibility unlimited, and because of the five of you whose hugs I can still feel, whose own lives made me so proud, I can confidently tell my guardian angel that my life is CAVU and it will be that way until I die. All because of you." The White House stands above the plaque, and a ribbon at the bottom offers the years of his presidency, "1989-1993."
