The United States Mint recognized the need for a silver bullion vehicle and introduced the American Silver Eagle in 1986. In the thirty years since they first provided these classic coins, they have become the standard bullion issue of the US and are far-and-away the most beloved silver bullion issue in coinage today. Each ASE is comprised of 1 oz. .999 fine silver bullion.
The iconic obverse design is a faithful depiction of Lady Liberty from the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin that was circulated from 1916-1947. The design was conceived of by Adolph A. Weinman and shows Liberty walking in the dawn of a new day.
The reverse of the coin was designed by the US Mint’s Renaissance Man: engraver, sculptor and designer, John Mercanti. The design features the classic symbol of America, the Bald Eagle with his wings outstretched. He is depicted beneath a field of thirteen stars.
