Why order this Proof 69 Ultra Cameo $50 1988-W American Gold Eagle?

Collectors looking for an early proof from this extremely popular series would do well to get this $50 American 1988-W Gold Eagle. Coming from the third year of issue of the popular series, the coin was struck from .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint, as evidenced by its "W" Mint mark. 87,133 of these pieces were produced.

Beloved Saint-Gaudens design

The obverse design takes its name from Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who created it for the double eagle. Liberty stands at the center facing the holder. In her right hand, she holds her torch, a symbol of freedom. In her left hand, she extends an olive branch, a symbol of peace. The stunning image, which is widely considered the most beautiful in the history of American numismatics, includes the rays of the rising sun and the Capitol Dome in the background. Fifty stars represent the states along the rim. Miley Busiek's reverse design consists of a family of eagles.

Virtually flawless Proof 69 Ultra Cameo

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) determined that this coin lacks even a single flaw that can be seen by the naked eye, but that it has at least one that visible under magnification. Accordingly, they awarded it their second highest grade, Proof 69. They also certified the piece as an Ultra Cameo, thus crediting it for having sharp contrasts between deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices.
