Struck at the San Francisco Branch of the U.S. Mint, this striking 1988-S Proof American Silver Eagle Coin is certified by PCGS to be in Proof 69 Deep Cameo condition.

1988-S Proof Silver Eagle

The earliest proof Silver Eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint. In the years that have passed these early San Francisco proofs have developed their own following, almost like Carson City Morgan dollars. Luckily, enough 1988 proof Silver Eagles were struck to keep them affordable. Just under 558,000 of these were made. Early proof Silver Eagles offer an attractive combination of value, eye appeal, and affordability.

PCGS Proof 69 Deep Cameo 1988 Silver Eagle

This 1988 proof Silver Eagle was professionally examined by PCGS. While PCGS is primarily known for grading, this also guarantees that the coin is real. The grade of PR69 was given to this coin, which makes it an excellent choice if you want a high grade coin without spending a fortune.

One of the most attractive features of this coin is its high level of contrast. This trait is why it was given the Deep Cameo designation. While value is determined mainly by grade, a Deep Cameo worthy contrast produces the eye appeal that we have come to expect from proof Silver Eagles.

1988 Proof Silver Eagle Design

The design on the front of the 1988 proof Silver Eagle was originally used for the Walking Liberty half dollar. This popular design was created by Adolph A. Weinman in the early 1900s. Liberty is shown with the stars and stripes of our flag surrounding her while she walks across the horizon. This side of the coin reads “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1988.”

The reverse of the Silver Eagle was designed by John Mercanti. This design depicts a bald eagle holding an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Arranged in a triangular pattern above the eagle’s head are 13 stars. The banner reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The rest of the inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
