Why add this 1988-P $5 American Gold Eagle Proof coin to your collection of precious metals?

1988 marked the third year of release for the American Gold Eagle series. Fractional denominations of the coin were struck at the Philadelphia Mint until 1993. This beautifully designed coin is struck from 1/10 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold measuring 16.51 mm in diameter, its final 1988 proof mintage reported by the United States Mint to be 143,881.

Magnificent Lady Liberty Design from the 1907 Double Eagle

Augustus Saint-Gaudens' timeless representation of Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse. She is depicted advancing forward, proudly grasping an olive branch and torch of freedom in her outstretched arms, with the rays of the rising sun radiating from behind and the U.S. Capitol Building at lower left. Fifty stars surround her, along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY," the date as "MCMLXXXVIII" and Philadelphia's "P" Mint mark.

The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, portrays a dramatic bald eagle in flight as it descends to its nest, returning to his mate and young with an olive branch gripped tightly in its talons.

Gorgeous Gold Proof Coin

This 1988-P Gold American Eagle is encapsulated and presented in a velvet lined, U.S. Mint branded case. The coin is ungraded, struck to the U.S. Mint's highest standard of proof quality, featuring incredibly detailed frosted design elements contrasted against highly polished mirrored fields.
