Why Make This 1987-W $50 Proof American Gold Eagle in Original Government Packaging the Next Addition to Your Collection?

The American Gold Eagle is one of the world's most popular gold bullion coins. This series made its debut in 1986. These coins are made of 22 karat gold and the Proof version is minted just for collectors. The Proof Gold Eagle offered here was struck at the West Point Mint in 1987. It has an actual gold weight of 1 Troy oz. There were 147,498 of these minted. This figure is high compared to other years of the series.

Inspiring Liberty and Bald Eagle Designs

The Liberty design on the obverse was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It was originally created for the Double Eagle, a circulating $20 gold coin. Liberty is pictured holding an olive branch while she holds her torch high with her other hand. The date is displayed in Roman numerals and the "W" Mint mark is just below it.

The gold content and face value are displayed on the reverse. The design shown here was created by Miley Busiek. A bald eagle has just returned to the nest where the rest of the family is waiting. The eagles and their nest feature an impressive level of detail.

Original Packaging

This coin hasn't been certified, it's still in its original government packaging. The original packaging includes a capsule and a classy display box.
