Why add this 1 oz. Proof Gold American Eagle to your collection?

1987 marked the first full year of production for the American Gold Eagle. Introduced in 1986 as the official gold bullion coin of the U.S., it was only available for the last three months of the year. This 1987-W $50 face value proof was struck at the U.S. Mint's New York facility in West Point from 1 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold sourced exclusively from mines located in the U.S. The magnificently struck coin has a diameter measurement of 32.7mm, and is among a final reported mintage of 147,498 1 oz. proofs that carry the "W" Mint mark, dated 1987.

Iconic patriotic imagery

The obverse features Lady Liberty striding forward with the rays of a rising sun behind, while carrying an olive branch in her left hand and flaming torch in her right, as designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. "LIBERTY" curves overhead, with "W," and "MCMLXXXVII" (1987 in Roman Numerals) appearing within the sun's rays.

The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, portrays an American bald eagle returning to his nest and family, an olive branch held in its talons.

Virtually flawless Proof 69

The Ultra Cameo designation refers to the remarkable contrast of finished surfaces struck onto the coin. This nearly perfect 1987-W $50 Proof Gold American Eagle is sealed in a protective holder, graded Proof 69 from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
