Obverse: The obverse features the walking figure of Lady Liberty wrapped in an American flag. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "1987" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The patriotic image is adapted from acclaimed sculptor Adolph A. Weinman's iconic design for the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

Reverse: The reverse, designed by John Mercanti, portrays a bald eagle with a shield at its breast, clutching an olive branch and arrows, an image which was inspired by the Great Seal of the United States. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." From 2006-2010, Mr. Mercanti held the prestigious post of Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.
