Why add this impressively graded 1987-(S) American Silver Eagle bullion coin to your collection?

The U.S. Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle series in 1986. The series is recognized worldwide for its symbolic imagery representing the themes of liberty, freedom and peace.

This second year of issue is particularly notable because the United States Mint recently confirmed that all 1987 (and 1986) bullion Silver Eagles were struck at the legendary San Francisco Mint! Thanks to a Freedom of Information Act inquiry, the United States Mint revealed that all 11,442,335 coins issued in 1987 were only struck at the San Francisco branch.

  • This American Silver Eagle was minted in 1987, the series' second year of issue.
  • The 40.60 mm diameter bullion coin contains 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver.
  • As a bullion coin without a Mint mark, the coin's origin is stated as the San Francisco Mint on its certification label only.
  • The coin features a designer signed certification label.
  • Final mintage is reported to be 11,442,335, all of which was struck at the San Francisco Mint!

Breathtaking American Silver Eagle Design

Obverse: The obverse features Lady Liberty wrapped in an American flag, walking towards the rising sun. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "1987" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The timeless personification of Liberty is borrowed from the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was designed by acclaimed architectural and medallic sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.

Reverse: The reverse depicts a bald eagle with a shield at its breast, clutching an olive branch and arrows. Thirteen stars are positioned above as a tribute to the original colonies. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The heraldic image is the work of John Mercanti, the Mint's 12th Chief Engraver, from 2006 until 2010.

Virtually Flawless Mint State 69

This 1987-(S) American Silver Eagle bullion coin earned the nearly perfect grade of Mint State 69 from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The 1 oz. silver dollar is encapsulated in a NGC protective holder with a patriotic American flag style certification label adorned with the signature of the reverse designer, John Mercanti.
