Obverse: Liberty is personified on the obverse as a young woman walking towards the rising sun with her right hand reaching out in a welcoming gesture. Her figure is wrapped in an American flag, as she carries a bundle of oak and laurel branches. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "1987" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The powerful patriotic image is adapted from acclaimed sculptor Adolph A. Weinman's iconic design for the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

Reverse: The reverse features an eagle in a heraldic pose, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with thirteen stars above. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." This image, which is now recognized as the Type-1 style, graced the reverse of all Silver Eagles issued from 1986 until mid-2021. The design was created by John Mercanti, the 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver.
