Breathtaking American Silver Eagle Design
Obverse: The obverse features Lady Liberty wrapped in an American flag, while walking towards the rising sun with an oak and laurel bouquet in her grasp. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "1987" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." This time-honored personification of Liberty is borrowed from the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was designed by acclaimed early 20th century American sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.
Reverse: The reverse illustrates a bald eagle with a shield at its breast, clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Thirteen stars are positioned above as an homage to the original colonies. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." This heraldic eagle graphic is the identifying element of the Type-1 Silver Eagle issued from 1986 until mid-2021. The image is the work of John Mercanti, the Mint's currently retired 12th Chief Engraver.
