1987 proof Constitution Silver Dollar

Public Law 99-582, signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on October 29, 1986, authorized the minting of a silver dollar to mark the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.

The obverse design for this coin, which shows a quill pen, a sheaf of parchment, and the iconic words of the Constitution’s beginning, “We the People,” while the reverse depicts a cross-section of Americans from various eras of our history. The design was selected through a competition.

This coin was sold individually and in two and four coin sets with either the uncirculated dollar, or with the proof and uncirculated $5 gold coin. The mintage of the proof version of this coin is 2,714,116 pieces. When the uncirculated version is included, the coin sold about three of the maximum authorized level of four million coins.
