Why purchase this 1/2 oz. Proof American Gold Eagle?

1987 marks the first year of release for the 1/2 oz. Proof Gold Eagle! Following the success of the 1 oz. Proof Gold American Eagle in its introductory year of 1986, the U.S. Mint expanded its proof offerings in 1987 to include the 1/2 oz. proof coin; the 1 oz. struck at West Point, and the 1/2 oz. minted in Philadelphia. This magnificent 1987-P Gold Eagle Proof is struck from 1/2 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold, and has a diameter measurement of 27mm. The U.S. Mint reports the final mintage for the 1/2 oz. Gold Eagle Proof first year of issue (1987) to be 143,398.

Classic Lady Liberty

The obverse image pays homage to the $20 Gold Double Eagle designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, depicting Lady Liberty walking forward with the sun's rays rising in the background, carrying an olive branch and flaming torch. The image is surrounded by fifty stars, "LIBERTY," "P," and "MCMLXXXVII" (1987 in Roman Numerals).

The reverse portrays a gorgeous bald eagle in flight carrying an olive branch to his nest, designed by Miley Busiek.

Proof 69 Ultra Cameo

This proof exhibits a full strike and is virtually free of any imperfections. The near perfect 1987-P $25 American Gold Eagle is graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be Proof 69 Ultra Cameo, for the outstanding mirror-like and frosted finishes.
