1987 1 oz (.999 fine) Silver Eagle GEM BU (Brilliant Uncirculated)
This 1987 Silver Eagle is the second edition of what is today the world’s most collected silver bullion coin. The piece is rich with patriotic imagery, which makes it appeal even to Americans that are not generally interested in collecting precious metals. For silver stackers and institutional buyers, though, the imagery is less important than the fact that the silver content is guaranteed by the United States government.
Design of the 1987 Silver Eagle
The obverse of the 1987 Silver Eagle is taken from the design that Adolph Weinman created for the Walking Liberty half dollar in 1916. Lady Liberty is draped with the American flag and is depicted walking toward the left of the coin. She bears symbols of civilian and military honors in the form of laurel and oak branches, while she extends her right hand out in front of her. In the lower left, the sun is setting on the horizon. At the base of the coin is the year of mintage, “1987,” while the word “LIBERTY” is inscribed around the top half of the rim. The national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is included in the lower right.
John Mercanti modeled his design for the reverse after the presidential seal. A thirteen-striped shield appears in the middle, with an eagle spread out around it. That eagle has its head turned to the left of the coin. Extending in both directions from its beak is a ribbon that bears the words, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one). It holds an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. Over its head is an arrangement of thirteen five-pointed stars, which, like thee stripes on the shield, pay tribute to the original states. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the country of issue, arches over the image, while “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR,” arches under it.
Why add this 1987 Silver Eagle to your collection?
This 1987 Silver Eagle is .9993 fine and has 1 Troy oz. of silver. Coming from just the second year of issue, the coin is likely to appeal to those who continue to stack Silver Eagles today. The coin’s large diameter, 40.6 mm, makes it easy to view and admire, and the imagery will appeal to any proud American. If you are looking for a coin that is secure and has a beautiful design, this is a great piece.
