The series was first struck in 1986, making this an example from the second year of issue. This coin was struck on a 91.67% pure gold planchet containing 1/10 oz. of gold bullion. This is a legal tender $5 United States coin. NGC records show a scant 6,136 examples in this grade from a low mintage of 580,266.

The image featured on the obverse of this coin originally appeared on the famous Augustus Saint-Gaudens "Double Eagle" $20 gold coin. The classic image of Liberty depicts her carrying the Torch of Enlightenment and the olive branch of Peace. The reverse image of a family of eagles is of a more recent vintage. Designed by Miley Busiek of the U.S. Mint, it depicts a male eagle carrying an olive branch in flight over his mate and hatchlings.
