Why purchase this 1986 $50 Proof Gold Eagle?

This 1986-W Gold Eagle comes from the first issue of the coin. The proof finish provides a great way to appreciate the obverse design, which is considered by many to be the most beautiful in American coinage. This coin is .9167 pure gold and was struck at the West Point Mint.

Who designed the Gold Eagle and what does it represent?

The reverse of the 1986-W Gold Eagle features a design by Miley Busiek. Focused on America’s national bird, the bald eagle, it consists of a male bearing an olive branch as it returns to its nest. There, the female guards their young. On the obverse is the famed Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle design. Liberty wears a loose garment that, like her hair, blows in the wind. To her side she holds an olive branch, symbolic of peace, and in front of her she extends her torch of freedom.

What does Proof 69 Ultra Cameo from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation mean?

Proof 69 is a grade given to coins that have flaws so minor that they only become apparent when the piece is viewed under magnification. The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certifies coins as being “Ultra Cameo” when both faces of the coin have strong contrasts between deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices.
