Why add this 1983-S Olympic Games Proof Silver Dollar to your collection?

The 1984 Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles, California. To celebrate the upcoming event, the U.S. Mint issued the first commemorative silver dollar to be produced by the United States Mint since 1900. The release of this silver dollar became the beginning of a continuing series of modern commemorative coins to be issued from the U.S. Mint with the same size, denomination and purity. Struck at the San Francisco Mint from 0.7736 Troy oz. of .90 fine silver, with a reported mintage of 1,577,025, this 1983-S Olympic Games Proof Silver Dollar has a diameter of 38.1 mm, and weighs 26.73g.

Chief Sculptor and Engraver of the U.S. Mint Elizabeth Jones designed this commemorative

The obverse features an image inspired by the work of Myron, depicting a traditional Greek discus thrower. Inscriptions include "LOS ANGELES XXIII OLYMPIAD," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "1983," and the Olympic rings. A majestic bald eagle adorns the reverse surrounded by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "ONE DOLLAR."
