Why add this 1983-S Olympic Games Proof Silver Dollar to your collection?
The release of the Olympics Silver Dollar in 1983 marked the return of a commemorative U.S. Mint silver dollar coin after a hiatus of eighty-three years. The coin was issued to celebrate the Summer Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles, California the following year.
Stunning Commemorative Imagery
Obverse: The obverse features a tripled graphic of a discus thrower, an image inspired by the iconic "Discobolus" sculpture by the 5th century BC Athenian artist Myron of Eleutherae. The athlete is accompanied by the Olympic rings and "star in motion" emblems, along with the inscriptions "LOS ANGELES XXIII OLYMPIAD," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "1983" and "S."
Reverse: The reverse is graced with a handsome bald eagle, with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" beneath its beak. The image is encircled by a border containing the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR," which are separated by ornamental branches of laurel. The coin's designs are credited to Elizabeth Jones, who was appointed the eleventh U.S. Mint Chief Engraver by President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
