Why add this Proof 69 Ultra Cameo 1982-S George Washington Proof Half Dollar to Your collection?

Prior to 1982, the U.S. Mint did not have a modern commemorative program. The very first coin of the program was the 1982 George Washington half a dollar. These were issued to celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birthday. The 90% silver coin shown here has a proof finish and was struck at the San Francisco Mint. The total mintage for the proof version was 4,894,044 pieces.

Detailed George Washington design

Both designs on this coin are the work of Elizabeth Jones. The obverse depicts George Washington on his horse. The occasion for this commemorative is inscribed here "250TH ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTH."

Mount Vernon can be seen on the reverse. The face value is inscribed at the bottom of this design.
