1982 Washington Half Dollar GEM BU
The 1982 Washington Half Dollar was issued to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the first President of the United States of America, George Washington. This BU coin marked the beginning of the modern commemorative coin era, being the first coin struck in 90% silver by the United States Mint since 1964. Commemorative coins are special releases produced to honor people, places, landmarks or events from throughout the country's history. The 1982 Washington Half Dollar is a favorite of collector's for its silver content (actual silver weight of .3617 oz.) and also due to the popularity of George Washington himself.
Washington Half Dollar Commemorative Coin Design
The obverse of the Washington Half Dollar 1982 commemorative coin features George Washington in his military uniform sitting stoically on horseback. Inscribed around the image are “GEORGE WASHINGTON”, “LIBERTY” and “250TH ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTH – 1982”. The GEM BU version was minted at the Denver location of the U.S. Mint and the coin is indicated as such with a “D” Mint mark.
On the reverse of the coin you will find a rendition of the eastern facade of Washington's home at Mount Vernon. The mansion and estate at Mount Vernon are now popular historic landmarks, offering visitors a peek into the life and times of this important and beloved founding father. Below the mansion on the reverse of the coin is a heraldic eagle reminiscent of the eagle on Silver American Eagle coins. Like that design, this eagle also holds a ribbon in its beak upon which is inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Other inscriptions on the reverse of the Washington Half Dollar include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “HALF DOLLAR”.
