Why does this 1970-S United States Mint Proof Set belong in your collection?
1970 was an interesting year for the U.S. Mint's annual Proof Set release. Firstly, the Kennedy Half Dollar included in the set was the last 40% silver coin included in an annual proof set until the specially minted bicentennial release in 1976. Secondly, quite by accident, the Roosevelt Dime in a small amount of the sets lacked the San Francisco Mint's "S" Mint mark. While the proof sets were struck in San Francisco, it was the Philadelphia Mint that was responsible for the creation of the dies, and one pair was inadvertently shipped without a Mint mark. It is estimated that approximately 2,200 sets were released before the error was detected.
Coins of the 1970 Proof Set
The set includes four proof coins bearing the "S" Mint mark: a Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Washington Quarter and a silver clad Kennedy Half Dollar. The fifth coin of the set is the famed proof Roosevelt Dime with no Mint mark.
