Why order this 1969-S Silver Kennedy Half Dollar Proof?
Early in the 1960's, President John F. Kennedy challenged NASA to make the United States the first nation ever to land on the moon. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, six years before NASA rose to his challenge. In 1964, the first Kennedy Half Dollars were issued. This 1969 proof edition comes from the year in which NASA finally met the goal that Kennedy had set out for it. Part of a mintage of 2,934,631 pieces, this coin was struck from 11.5 g of .400 fine silver.
Featuring Gilroy Roberts's Famous President John F. Kennedy Design
The obverse bears a left-side portrait of President John F. Kennedy by Gilroy Roberts. The young leader's hair is neatly combed, and he bears a countenance of sober determination. "LIBERTY" arches over him, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is included near the bottom. Also on the rim is the date, "1969."
Frank Gasparro designed the reverse. Based on the Presidential Seal, it consists of an eagle spreading its wings and legs while guarding a union shield. It holds arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, in one talon and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace, in the other. It also holds a ribbon that unfurls over its head in its beak. The ribbon bears the phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Above the ribbon are thirteen stars, which represent the original states. Fifty stars encircle this image. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim.
Stunning GEM Proof with Black Core Holder and Charlie Duke Signed label
In 1972, Charlie Duke became the tenth and youngest man ever to walk on the moon. He hand signed the label on which Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided its grade, GEM Proof. The coin itself has been set in a sleek black core holder.
