Why add the 1969-2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Robbins Medal: 1 oz Antiqued Medal GEM BU to your collection?
This 1969-2019 Apollo 11 Robbins Medal was issued to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11th space flight and lunar landing. This Antiqued Medal was struck by Sunshine Minting on a 1 oz. copper-nickel planchet. This issue is based on the original Robbins Medal strikes, which are virtually unavailable to most collectors due to their extremely low original mintages. Many Robbins Medals were sterling silver issues that were actually space flown - they were designed by astronauts for astronauts. This medal utilizes the original design from 1969.
Beginning with Apollo 7, the Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts worked with one or more astronauts from each mission to design and strike medallions that would travel aboard the flights into space. Funded by the crews and available for purchase only by NASA astronauts and members of the Astronaut Flight Office (AFO) support crew, these sterling silver mementos usually had extremely limited mintages of between 100 to 450 medals per mission. Today, these highly prized medals sell for tens of thousands of dollars at auction.
One Giant Step for Collectors
The obverse of the issue features an image familiar to coin collectors: the Apollo 11 mission badge. This dramatic bald eagle landing on the moon image famously appeared on the reverses of the classic Susan B. Anthony and "Ike" Eisenhower dollar coins. The reverse features the names of Apollo 11 crew members Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, and the dates of the mission.
Beautiful Gem BU Example
Gem BU medals are choice uncirculated examples that would grade at the MS65 level or higher. The antiqued finish creates a darkened appearance in recessed areas and along the edges of the design devices. Gem BU examples are coveted and widely collected.
