Classic Sinnock Design

John R. Sinnock, the Eighth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint was the primary designer of this series. The obverse portrait was based on the Jean-Antoine Houdin bust of Mr. Franklin that was produced when he was alive. The effigy produced was also actually based on earlier work that Sinnock had done on a Benjamin Franklin medal. The reverse of the coin features an image of the Liberty Bell that was based on drawings by John Frederick Lewis originally and led to Sinnock's classic reverse on the 1926 Sesquicentennial Half Dollar. The addition of a small eagle was made when Mint officials realized that legislation requiring an eagle on the reverse of the denomination existed. Sinnock died during the preparation of the coin and as a result of his successor Gilroy Roberts finished the models and dies.
