The "First American" Obverse

Obverse: The obverse of the coin features Founding Father Benjamin Franklin's portrait. This portrait is based on a sculpture by Jean-Antoine Houdin. Franklin was often called "The First American" due to his tireless campaigning for the establishment of the United States. The design was started by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Sinnock and finished by his successor Gilroy Roberts after Mr. Sinnock's death.

Reverse: The iconic bell image used on the reverse was inspired by the 1926 Sesquicentennial Commemorative Half Dollar reverse. The small eagle was added after it was pointed out that the initial design didn't comply with U.S. laws.

Spectacular Toning

Exceptional Proof Proof coins are struck specifically for collectors using a specialized, multi-strike process on polished dies and planchets. These coins receive extra care in handling to produce superior quality coins. Toning can be a natural process that can impart beautiful coloration that results from the interaction of the metal of the coin, moisture, air and naturally occurring elements in the atmosphere.
