Historic Balboa Obverse

The obverse image used is an armored, left-facing bust of Vasco Nunez de Balboa. He was a famous Spanish explorer and conquistador who was the first European to lead an expedition with the intent to cross the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean. In 1513 this expedition became the first Europeans to reach the Pacific from the New World. The reverse image features a full-length Liberty. She holds a fasces in one arm and an oak branch in her other. Her hand rests on the Panamanian shield.
