Why purchase this superbly graded 1945-S Silver Mercury Dime?
The Winged Liberty Head Dime was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1916. The coin's moniker as the Mercury Dime was a result of the resemblance of Liberty in a winged cap with the image of Mercury, the Roman god of trade, profit and commerce. This Silver Mercury Dime is one of 41,920,000 struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1945, the series' final year of production.
Symbolic Artistry of Adolph A. Weinman
Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse, wearing a winged Phrygian cap, representing the nation's optimistic spirit of freedom. The inscription "LIBERTY" curves overhead, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "1945" below. Weinman's initials appear to the right, as an overlapping "AW" graphic.
A Roman fasces (gathered bundle of wood with a protruding axe blade) is centered on the reverse, with an olive branch curling around it, symbolizing strength, peace and unity. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DIME," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the "S" Mint mark.
