Why add this 1945-S Silver Mercury Dime to your collection?
The U.S. Mint's Mercury Dime, or Winged Liberty Dime series was introduced in 1916 and minted until 1945, featuring a stunning personification of Lady Liberty created by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. This final year of issue 1945 example bears the "S" Mint mark, struck at the San Francisco Mint from 0.0723 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver. Final mintage of the 17.8 mm diameter coin is reported to be 41,920,000 coins.
Gorgeous Winged Liberty Design
The obverse features Lady Liberty in a wing-adorned Phrygian cap, surrrounded by the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "1945" and the artist's monogram "AW." The coin became known as the Mercury Dime for the resemblance of Liberty's winged cap to that of the Roman God Mercury's.
The reverse depicts a Roman fasces wrapped with an olive branch, representing unity, strength and peace, encircled by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DIME." Additional inscriptions include "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the "S" Mint mark of the San Francisco Mint.
