Why purchase this 3-Coin 1943-P+D+S Steel Lincoln Cent Set?

During World War II, the United States needed copper for combat purposes. One of the ways that the country met that need was by changing the composition of pennies to zinc-coated steel. The experiment was short lived since the new color pennies did not work in venting machines and were often confused with nickels in commerce. This set consists of three of these historic issues and is perfect for collectors with an interest in World War II history.

  • Each coin in this set is 1 cent legal tender in the United States.
  • Each piece was struck from 2.7 g of steel.
  • The steel is coated in zinc.
  • The set consists of three business strike pennies struck in 1943.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded each piece Mint State 65.

Somber President Abraham Lincoln Design by Victor D. Brenner

Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear designs by Victor D. Brenner. On the obverse is a right-side portrait of President Abraham Lincoln. He is joined by the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "1945."

Reverse: On the reverse, the coin's face value, "ONE CENT," is inscribed in large font in the center. It is joined by an inscription of the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Those two inscriptions are flanked by two sheaves of wheat, while the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is inscribed at the top.

Virtually Flawless MS65

Each penny in this set earned a Mint State 65 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). To earn that grade, a coin must have been well struck and lack any traces of wear.
