Why purchase this 1938 Russia 5 Rouble Flyer Paper Currency Note?

This handsome Russian paper currency note issued in 1938, just prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, demonstrates the reverence the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) held for its aviators. Dubbed the "Flyer," the 5 Rouble note honored the achievements of Soviet pilots while celebrating the nation's technological superiority. The note specifically tributes pilot Valery Pavlovich Chkalov, who was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1936. Chkalov was the first person to fly from Moscow to the U.S. over the North Pole, and was planning the world's first nonstop global flight when he died testing a prototype of the Polikarpov I-180 fighter in 1938.

  • This 5 Rouble paper currency note was issued by the USSR in 1938.
  • The note measures approximately 143 x 68 mm.
  • The note features a unique serial number.

Magnificent Commemorative Imagery

Obverse: A portrait of Chkalov is positioned on the right of the obverse, dressed in a flight suit equipped with a parachute, while an airplane is depicted in the background. The remainder of the surface includes text describing the note's denomination, serial number and year of issue "1938," with the hammer and sickle state emblem of the USSR in the upper left corner.

Reverse: The reverse features an intricately detailed ornamental rectangle, with a guilloche patterned rosette in each corner containing the number "5." A larger rosette located at the center declares the note's numerical denomination and Russian inscription representing "FIVE RUBLES." The central rosette is flanked by the denomination written in the ten major languages in the USSR at the time of issue, including Ukrainian, Belarusian, Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Turkmen, Tajik, Kazakh and Kyrgyz.

Stunning 1938 Note

This ungraded 1938 Russia 5 Rouble Flyer Paper Currency Note is judged to be in Fine to Very Fine (F-VF) condition. As a note actually circulated in the USSR during the Second World War, expect the note to exhibit moderate to considerable signs of wear.
