Why buy this 1929 $2.50 Gold Indian Head Quarter Eagle?

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle is one of the most popular historic American coins among collectors thanks in large part to its unique incuse designs. This 1929 edition is particularly appealing due to the significance of the year in which it was struck. The U.S. stock market crashed, effectively bringing an early end to the Roaring '20s and leading to the Great Depression, one of the most economically challenging times in American history. That makes this coin perfect for collectors with an interest in the country's history and currency.

  • This coin was $2.50 legal tender in the United States.
  • This coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
  • This coin was struck on a 4.18 g planchet of .900 fine gold.
  • This Gold Indian Head was part of a mintage of 532,000 pieces.
  • This series is famous for its incuse designs.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin a Mint State 64 grade.
  • This example earned the right to bear NGC's Green Label.

Classic Indian Head Design by Bela Lyon Pratt

Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear designs that were created by Bela Lyon Pratt. Pratt's obverse design is a Native American man wearing a feathered headdress while facing left. His image is encircled by thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "LIBERTY" and "1929."

Reverse: Pratt's reverse design is a left-facing eagle perched proudly on arrows that have an olive branch wrapped around them. The mottoes "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are inscribed to the left and right of the bird, respectively. Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "2 1/2 DOLLARS." Bela Lyon Pratt was a graduate of Yale's School of Fine Arts. The Indian Head Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle are his best known contributions to numismatics.

Uncirculated MS64 with Green Label

This coin's grade comes on a Green Label, a collaboration between Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA) and Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Before the coin was submitted to NGC, it was examined and determined to meet the guidelines of RARCOA. NGC then gave the coin a Mint State 64 grade, which means that it has an average or better strike and no traces of wear.
