Why add this 1929 Gold Indian Head Quarter Eagle to your collection?
The U.S. Mint's Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle series concluded with this 1929 dated release. Design of the series is credited to Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, former student of 1907 Double Eagle creator Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The coin featured an incuse strike with a rimless edge, which was an exciting first for the U.S. Mint at the time of the series' introduction in 1908. Public opinion of the coin's innovative new style was not favorable, for fear that the deep recesses of the coin would collect and then transfer germs and disease.
Stunning Rimless Design
Obverse: A Native American chief is portrayed facing left on the obverse, while wearing a full feathered headdress. The portrait is surrounded by thirteen stars, which are divided by the inscription "LIBERTY" above and the date of issue "1929" below.
Reverse: The reverse features a beautifully rendered eagle, perched upon a cluster of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols referencing military preparedness and peace. The inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" sweeps above, with "2 1/2 DOLLARS" below. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" flank the national bird. The absence of a Mint mark confirms the coin's Philadelphia Mint origin.
