Why add the 1928 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle NGC MS62 to your collection?

This remarkable 1928 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle was graded a stunning Mint State 62 (MS62) by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The denomination was struck on 90% pure gold planchets, each containing .1210 oz. of gold. This coin was one of 416,000 struck at the Philadelphia Branch of the U.S. Mint. There are 6,085 examples in this grade according to NGC. When this unpopular design circulated from 1908-1915 and 1925-1929 people feared that the incuse design would attract and hold germs! Because of the ill-founded germ phobia, these coins were not saved by collectors and many were caught in the gold melts of the Thirties. This final circulating Gold Quarter Eagle coin was a complete departure from a design standpoint. It remains the only recessed design in American coinage, shared with the $5 gold half eagle.

Beautiful Incuse Design

The obverse shows a Native American man in a full-feathered headdress. This image was based on a photograph of an unnamed subject. The reverse depicts the classic American Eagle standing on arrows and an olive branch based on a Saint-Gaudens design. This design was executed by Bela Lyon Pratt, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Mint State 62

MS62 coins are fully uncirculated examples. They will have some distractions but will feature all design details, original surfaces and remaining Mint luster.
