Why buy this $2.50 Gold 1928 Indian Head Quarter Eagle?
Every collector should have at least one Indian Head coin. The coins are usually extremely popular today given their incuse designs, which distinguish them from other historic American coinage. This is somewhat ironic given that the use of incuse designs was controversial at the time. This coin comes from the penultimate issue of the $2.50 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle.
Unique Incuse Indian Head Design by Bela Lyon Pratt
Obverse: Bela Lyon Pratt's obverse design depicts a Native American man in left-side profile. He wears an elaborate feathered headdress. The image is encircled by thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "LIBERTY" and "1928."
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle stands perched on arrows that are wrapped in a branch. To the left and right of the eagle, respectively, are the statutory mottoes "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rim inscriptions provide the issuing country's name, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "2 1/2 DOLLARS."
