This stunning 1928 $500 24KT Gold Certificate Commemorative was graded by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) at the sought after at the GEM level. The note is part of an eight issue commemorative series available exclusively to the clients of ModernCoinMart. The series features commemorative re-issues of the 1928 small format gold certificates. These were the only small format Gold Certificates to circulate in the United States before the Gold Confiscation of the thirties. The original notes were illegal to own from the time of the confiscation until 1964. Each 24 karat gold foil in the series weighs 100 mg.
$500 William McKinley Obverse
The portrait of 25th president of the United States, William McKinley is featured on the obverse of this note. He served from 1897 until 1901 when he was assassinated. President McKinley won the Spanish-American War and passed the Gold Standard Act in 1900. Beneath the portrait reads "Five Hundred Dollars in Gold Coin payable to the Bearer on Demand." The reverse features an elaborate engraving in the center. There are seven numerical repetitions of the "500" denomination and one of "The United States of America" and "Five Hundred Dollars."
