Why add the 1927 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle NGC MS64 Green Label to your collection?

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this 1927 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle at the lofty Mint State 64 (MS64) level. This example also earned the right to bear NGC's Green Label which was the result of a collaboration between NGC and one of the leading numismatic distributors in the United States, Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA).

  • The coin qualified to carry NGC's Green Label.
  • The Indian design was struck during two periods: 1908 until 1915 and 1925 through 1929.
  • This example was struck at the famed Philadelphia branch of the U.S. Mint.
  • The series was struck on 90% gold 10% copper planchets containing .12094 oz. of bullion.
  • The mintage is a low 388,000 coins.
  • The series is one of two identical series with the only "incused" or recessed designs in the history of American coinage.

Unique Incuse Design

Obverse: The image used on the obverse of the coin features a Native American Chief in full feathered "war bonnet." Both sides of the coin were designed by artist Bela Lyon Pratt.

Reverse: The image used on the reverse features a bald eagle as required by legislation. The design is an homage to Pratt's teacher Augustus Saint-Gaudens who placed a similar design on the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural medal.

Low Population Green Label MS64

Mint State 64 coins possess excellent eye appeal, few distractions and significant collector demand. These coins have all of the design details present, original surfaces and magnificent lustrous appearance. Green Labels are reserved for coins that were first selected by numismatic experts at RARCOA for having elements such as outstanding eye-appeal, booming luster, strong strike, or attractive toning. Coins are then submitted to NGC for further review, certification, and encapsulation.
