Why purchase this 1927 Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagle coin?
The Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle series was produced by the U.S. Mint from 1907-1933, with a break in minting from 1917-1919 due to the effects of the First World War. Design of the coin is the result of a collaboration between sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and President Theodore Roosevelt, who desired imagery to reflect the nation's identity similar to the coinage of ancient Greece. This 1927 Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .9675 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold, its mintage reported to be 2,946,750.
Beautiful Patriotic Designs
The obverse features Lady Liberty confidently striding forward carrying an olive branch in her left hand and flaming torch held aloft in her right. Behind her, a radiant sun rises over the U.S. Capitol building. The image is surrounded by forty-eight stars, one for each state at the time of issue. Inscribed "LIBERTY" and "1927."
A magnificent eagle is depicted on the reverse, in flight over the rising sun. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "TWENTY DOLLARS" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
