Patriotic Saint-Gaudens Design

Obverse: Long the personification of the United States on coinage, Liberty stands at the center of the obverse. Striking a confident pose, she holds her torch, a symbol of freedom, in one hand and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in her other hand. She appears larger than life thanks to the miniature rendering of the Capitol Dome and the rays of the morning sun, which spread out behind her. The image is named for Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who designed both faces of this coin.

Reverse: The national bird, a bald eagle, soars with its wings spread against a backdrop of the rays of the sun on the reverse. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" are inscribed at the top of this face. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is included at the bottom. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an immigrant from Ireland who is most famous for designing this coin, which is named for him. He also created several sculptures that remain on display in cities throughout the United States, as well as works that appear in Europe.

Uncirculated MS64
