Why purchase this $2.50 1926 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle?

Any collector of American coins must have at least one Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle. The coin distinguishes itself from others with its unique incuse design, which caused some trouble when it was circulated. Fortunately, this piece never made it into circulation. It was part of a mintage of 446,000 pieces, each of which was struck from 4.18 g of .900 fine gold at the Philadelphia Mint.

Classic Incuse Indian Head Design by Bela Lyon Pratt

Both faces of this coin were designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. On the obverse is an aged Native American man, who is depicted wearing a feathered headdress. Thirteen stars, six on the left and seven on the right, separate the rim inscriptions, "LIBERTY" and "1926."

An eagle stands proudly on the reverse. Shown from the left, the bird is perched upon a bunch of arrows, symbols of military readiness. An olive branch, a symbol of peace, wraps around the arrows. Four inscriptions are on this face, including the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the face value, "2 1/2 DOLLARS."

Uncirculated MS62

This coin earned an uncirculated Mint State 62 grade from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). When a coin receives that grade, it lacks any signs of wear.
