Why add the 1926 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle NGC Mint State 63 to your collection?
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this 1926 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle at the solidly collectible Mint State 63 level. This coveted series was struck on .900 fine gold planchets that contain .12094 oz. actual gold weight. The mintage of 446,000 coins is one of the higher in the series but does not address the unknown number of specimens caught up in the 1933 gold melt. This coin was struck at the Philadelphia branch of the United States Mint.
Iconic Incuse American Design
The U.S. gold coinage redesign fell to the artist and sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, after his teacher Augustus Saint-Gaudens died. The obverse image used on the coin is that of a wise and weather-worn Indian Chief. The reverse image depicts a bald eagle standing on a clutch of arrows wrapped with an olive branch. It was based on the Teddy Roosevelt Inaugural Medal. The hallmark of this design is that the details are "incused" or imprinted in the coin.
